1. Cody Bellinger signs one-year deal with Cubs

The 2019 NL MVP is leaving the Dodgers to sign a one-year, $17.5 million deal with the Chicago Cubs. The Sporting Tribune’s Blake Harris has the latest on the Dodgers losing another key piece from their World Series runs.

Even though we were expecting it, today was a pretty sad day for Dodgers fans. Cody Bellinger, the 2019 NL MVP winner, signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. His run with the Dodgers is officially over. After being non-tendered by LA last month, this move was expected. The Dodgers were unwilling to pay him the $18 million he was expected to earn in 2023. Well, it appears numerous teams were willing to do so, including the Cubs.

2. Mitchell scores 43 as Cavs sweep Lakers in season series

The Lakers' three-game winning streak is over as Anthony Davis exits the game in the first quarter with flu-like symptoms. The Sporting Tribune’s Rey Moralde has more on the Lakers as they continue their east coast road trip.

It’s their third game of this Eastern swing and the Lakers were overpowered late by the Cavs, 116-102. The Lakers fail to go to one game under .500. What was noteworthy, though, was the Lakers lost Anthony Davis at 3:53 left in the first quarter. He was said to have flu-like symptoms. As of now, we don’t know if he’ll be available on Wednesday night against Toronto.

3. Nick Frasso could be the next great Dodgers arm

The closer you look at Dodgers prospect Nick Frasso, the more impressive his 2022 season becomes and The Sporting Tribune’s Bruce Kuntz on the man who could be the next great arm for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers acquired the right hander from the Blue Jays back in August, sending swingman Mitch White and prospect Alex De Jesus to Toronto. Los Angeles also got rookie ball southpaw Moises Brito. The immediate reaction from many was confusion. White had already made 15 MLB appearances in 2022 for a solid 3.70 ERA and De Jesus was the Dodgers’ 20th ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline. But the deeper you examine the trade, the more it looks like a great move. Through his first 36 2/3 innings before the trade, Frasso posted a 0.74 ERA with 57 strikeouts. He made six more starts with the Dodgers system before the end of the year, four of which came in his first Double-A stint. Eight earned runs crossed in 17 1/3 innings across those final six starts and left his final ERA at 1.83.

4. Rams claim QB Baker Mayfield off waivers

The former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick in the draft is joining the Rams. The Sporting Tribune has more on the Rams’ decision to add a new quarterback with Matthew Stafford out for the season.

Former No. 1 draft pick Baker Mayfield is getting another chance to save his career, this time with the defending Super Bowl champions. The Los Angeles Rams claimed Mayfield off waivers Tuesday, a day after the Carolina Panthers cut ties with the beleaguered quarterback just five months into their marriage. The Rams (3-9) lost their sixth straight game Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks, with John Wolford starting under center. Matthew Stafford, who had been diagnosed with a concussion and neck injury a few weeks prior, was revealed after the game to have a spinal contusion that likely ended his season.
